Support Us with AmazonSmile

HANA is excited to announce that we are now a registered charitable organization with AmazonSmile! Shop at smile.amazon.com and 0.5% of your eligible purchases will be donated to the Hokkaido Association of North America.

What is AmazonSmile?

AmazonSmile is a simple way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. AmazonSmile is available at smile.amazon.com on your web browser and can be activated in the Amazon Shopping app for iOS and Android phones. When you shop with AmazonSmile, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added benefit that AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. You can choose from over one million organizations to support.

How do I shop with AmazonSmile?

To use AmazonSmile, simply go to smile.amazon.com on your web browser or activate AmazonSmile in the Amazon Shopping app on your iOS or Android phone within the Settings or Programs & Features menu. On your web browser, you can add a bookmark to smile.amazon.com to make it even easier to return and start your shopping with AmazonSmile.

How do I select HANA to support with AmazonSmile?

On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you will be prompted to select a charitable organization (Hokkaido Association of North America, Inc) to receive donations from your future eligible AmazonSmile purchases. Amazon will remember your selected charity whenever you shop at smile.amazon.com or with AmazonSmile activated in the Amazon Shopping app, and then every eligible purchase you make through AmazonSmile will result in a donation for your selected charity. AmazonSmile will occasionally contact you about donation amounts disbursed to your chosen charity or about the program.

You can also click here to choose HANA as your AmazonSmile charity and start shopping! This link will take you directly to AmazonSmile in support of HANA so you won’t have to search for us among almost a million other organizations.

How do I make sure to always shop with AmazonSmile?

When you follow a link from a search or ad, it will take you to the main Amazon store rather than smile.amazon.com. You have to remember to manually change the url every time or your purchases will not generate any donations for your selected charity. This is such a hassle! Fortunately, there are browser extensions available for all major browsers to automatically redirect you to AmazonSmile when you click any Amazon link. The redirection happens seamlessly and you wont even notice.

We’re Officially a 501(c)3

We did it! HANA is officially a 501(c)3! In late September we received the Letter of Determination from the IRS that the Hokkaido Association of North America has received 501(c) status and is tax-exempt and eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions in accordance with Code section 170. HANA is so very excited to start making some serious fundraising plans for our Hokkaido conservation efforts.

HANA has set up a profile on GuideStar, a public database for charitable organizations, and will soon be an option for AmazonSmile and Facebook fundraisers. Stay tuned for more information about those. In the mean time, if you wish to send us a donation, it is always appreciated. We will make sure to get you a receipt for your tax write-off.

HANA is a Good Dog Grant Recipient

Full Press Release: July 27th, 2021

Good Dog is thrilled to announce that the Hokkaido Association of North America (HANA) is the official recipient of a Good Dog Grant!

At Good Dog, we are so inspired by HANA and their dedication to advancing, protecting, and preserving the Hokkaido breed since the Club was selected in 2011 as the designated parent club of the Hokkaido efforts in North America. The Hokkaido are one of the oldest of the six native Japanese spitz breeds with roots dating back nearly 8,000 years ago.

Good Dog established the Club Grant Program to support Clubs, like the HANA, in their crucial efforts to build a better world for our dogs.

As an official Good Dog Grant Recipient, HANA will receive a Good Dog Grant, Club recognition on the Good Dog website, and priority status offered to HANA members who apply to Good Dog! HANA will use their Good Dog Grant to help build up a genetic database for the breed, by subsidizing the cost of BetterBred genetic diversity tests.

Join us to help change the conversation – give dog breeders the recognition they deserve and build a better world for our dogs and the people who love them. Click here to join Good Dog today!

CHIC Program Acceptance

The Hokkaido Ken has been accepted into the CHIC Program, and now any Hokkaido who meets all of the required breed health testing will be issued a CHIC number. Note that it does not mean that the dog passed all of the tests, only that they were completed and results submitted to the public OFA database. Right now the state of the breed is such that we need these tests in order to make informed breeding decisions, but an abnormal score is not necessarily cause to remove the dog from breeding. Also, we are still gathering info about health statistics in the breed so making results public is extremely valuable.

The required tests as per HANA and CHIC are:

  • OFA or PennHIP Hip Dysplasia Evaluation
  • OFA Cardiac Evaluation
  • OFA/CERF Eye Examination
  • Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) DNA Test

The optional tests are:

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) DNA Test
  • OFA Patellar Luxation Evaluation
  • OFA Elbow Dysplasia Evaluation
  • OFA Thyroid Evaluation

You can read more about these on the CHIC website or on our health testing page.
